Week 16 Vs Bengals

The Steelers played well in all three phrases of the game in a 27 to 17 win over the Cincinnati Bengals to clinch the AFC North Title.   The defense had 3 sacks and 3 turnovers, plus the secondary didn’t miss a beat with the losses of Troy Polamalu and Ike Taylor.   The front seven put the pressure on Andy Dalton and limited A.J Green’s big plays.  Green left the game with head injury on the fumble recovery by Antwan Blake.   On offense, Ben Roethlisberger was suffering with the flu, but had a great game throwing for 317 yards and 2 touchdowns.   Antonio Brown had 7 catches for 128 yards and a 63 yard touchdown to salt the game away.   Le’veon Bell had 20 yards rushing because he suffered a hyper extended knee and may miss next week’s game.   Special Teams has some good and bad plays.   The bad play was the fake punt pass from Brad Wing that was intercepted by the Bengals.   The great play was Antonio Brown 71 yard punt return for a touchdown   Shaun Suisham made two field goals and 3 extra points.  The coverage units stop Adam Jones from making a big return.     The Steelers will take on the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Wild Card game next Saturday night at Heinz Field with kickoff at 8:30 P.M.

New Man

Pat Narduzzi was officially hired as the new head football coach at Pitt this afternoon.   During his news conference Narduzzi mentioned that Pitt can win a national title.   It has been too long since a new head coach has mentioned that, and with his recruiting success at Michigan State it could be possible.    It has been 33 years since Pitt played in games that matter and that was during an era when it was a national power.   Could Pat Narduzzi make them a national power again. That will depend on what he does on the recruiting trail, and how he coaches on the sidelines next season.

Streak

The Steelers are going into this Sunday game versus the Cincinnati Bengals with a 3 game winning streak and clinched a playoff spot.   If the Steelers win  they get a  home playoff game during the wild card round and the AFC North Title, but if they Bengals win they will open on the road.   The Steelers home playoff opponent could either the Ravens, Chargers, Chiefs, or the Texans.  If they open on the road it will be against the Indianapolis Colts.  This game will be tough because the Bengals could be out of several players with the flu or injuries including A.J Green who missed the Broncos game with an elbow injury.  If they are not one hundred percent if could be tough for them.  The Steelers are coming off their best defensive game of the season last Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.   The Steelers have the problem of inconsistent play during the season, but with a home playoff game on the line, plus the divisional title they could make it a long night versus the Bengals.

Playoff

The college football playoff is set and on New Year’s Day two playoff games will take place. Florida State will take Oregon in the Rose Bowl, and Alabama will take on Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl.     Florida State is the defending national champions taking on the high power Oregon offense.  Florida State Jameis Winston despite of his off the field problems has the Seminoles on 26 game winning streak,  Oregon is led by Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Marcus Mariota powers the Ducks offense.    This game will be turn on how the Oregon defense will stop the Seminoles offense.    I am hoping for a high scoring game, but Oregon has too many weapons and they will defeat Florida State.    In the Sugar Bowl, it is old SEC match up between Urban Meyer taking on Nick Saban as Ohio State takes on Alabama.    Ohio State is going on its 3rd quarterback Cardale Jones after Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett was lost due injuries, while Alabama’s quarterback Blake Sims waited his turn for his opportunity.  Bama has great offense led by offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin.   However, they have a great defense as well and they have to put the pressure on Jones, and stop the Buckeyes running game.  Alabama is too good on both sides on both sides of the ball and will defeat Ohio State.   That will set up Oregon Vs Alabama in the National Title game on January 12th, and that would be a great match up.

Week 15 vs Chiefs

The Steelers had a workmanlike performance against the Kansas City Chiefs and won 20 to 12.  The win give them a 10 and 5 record and they also clinch their first playoff spot since 2011.    Ben Roethlisberger had a good game throwing for 225 yards and a touchdown.   Le’veon Bell didn’t have a good game but rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown.  Antonio Brown had a good game with 5 catches for 72 yards and a touchdown.   The defense had an outstanding game getting 6 sacks and shutting down Jamal Charles all day.   On special teams, Shawn Suisham made two field goals and the coverage didn’t give up a big return for the second straight week.  The Steelers close out the regular season against the Cincinnati Bengals next Sunday at Heinz Field for the AFC North divisional title.   However, the time is yet to be determined at this time.

Changing Leadership

Pitt Football is in a flux right now because there is no head coach because Paul Chryst is the new head coach at Wisconsin.   Joe Rudolph is the interim head coach, but might follow Chryst to Wisconsin.   There have been reports that Michigan State Defensive Coordinator Pat Narduzzi could get an interview as early as this weekend, but Colorado State is also interested in him as well.   I believe that Tom Bradley could coach this team, but some fans don’t want him because of the Jerry Sandusky situation.  Pitt want to hire a new football coach before they get an new athletic director.   This is a great idea if they get the right coach for the team.  With recruiting starting up soon Pitt has to get it right even if they have to give up a recruiting class to do it.

Money

I watched a video on Antone Walker who played for the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat and lost 110 million dollars in his career. Dallas Cowboys Tryon Smith had to use legal means to prevent his family from taking a lot of his money. Athletes like that have either lost all of their money or had problems with it during or after their careers. Some athletes don’t have the financial advisers to guide them or don’t care to listen to anyone. Mike Tyson is another example of losing millions, but he is a promoting boxing via Iron Mike Productions and hopefully young fighters will not make the same mistakes Tyson made. On the other end of the spectrum, Lebron James is handing his money with successful entrepreneur Warren Buffett, and his own team led by his agent Maverick Carter. The saying of a fool and his money soon part ways is true in some ways, but with an athlete’s career being short you have taking of the financial opportunities and not be irresponsible with them.
