Bet On It

ESPN’s Outside The Lines did a report and it discovered that Pete Rose bet on baseball as a player.  If this report is true it will make it impossible for Rose to go into the Baseball Hall of Fame.  Rose, who is baseball all time hit leader and was suspended for life for making bets as a manager of the Cincinnati Reds in 1989.  The suspension was based on the John Dowd report that Rose made bets during the 1989 season.   Rose has applied for reinstatement and wanted to talk to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred about it.  For years Rose has denied every betting on baseball, but in 2004 he finally came clean in an interview with ABC’s Charlie Gibson.   Rose at the time was promoting his book My Prison Without Bars and that came off sleazy and a money grab.    I don’t see him getting into the Baseball Hall of Fame while his alive, but after his passing he will get in.  4,256 hits will let Rose in, but gambling on the game will not go unpunished.

What is an Athlete

Over the years there have been discussion about what is an athlete.  Is it someone who hit a baseball or catch a football.  It is someone who can knocked out someone in boxing or MMA.   Maybe it is a race car driver, bowler, golfer, tennis player or someone who can lift weights over 500 lbs.    It could be a soccer player, bobsledder, or a track and field athlete who in one event or a decathlon.    There is no clear definition on what is athlete, but there is one clear definition for me it doesn’t matter what sports it is if you are great at it then you are an athlete.

NBA Finals Game 6

The Golden State Warriors started game 6 with a single purpose to finish the series tonight and took control from the opening possession. They took a 28 to 15 lead after the first quarter.  The Cavaliers came out strong in the second quarter led by Lebron James and Timofey Mozgov, and by halftime they trailed 47 to 45.  The Warriors started making their 3 point shots and going into the 4th quarter they lead 73 to 62.   The Cavaliers make a run to cut the Warriors lead to 7 points with 37 seconds left in the game. Then, J.R. Smith made a 3 point shot to cut the deficit to 101-97, but Stephen Curry made two free throws to increase the Warriors lead to 103 to 97.   The Warriors won their first NBA Title since 1975  with a 105 to 97 win in-game six  Andre Iguodala was named Finals MVP had an incredible game with 25 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 points.   Stephen Curry also had 24 points, and Draymond Green had a triple-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.  Cleveland was led by Lebron James with 32 points 18 rebounds and 9 assists.   Mozgov had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Tristan Thompson had 15 points and 13 rebounds.  This series will always be what if Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love were healthy and their 3 point shooting suffered because of that.

Tyler’s Troubles

Pitt Wide Receiver Tyler Boyd was arrested for DUI early Friday morning, and he showed poor judgement on his part.  Boyd could be a high draft pick for next year’s NFL Draft.    He is supposed to be a team leader and does something real dumb before the season.  This is a lapse of judgment and if Pitt wants to suspended him it could happen in the opening game versus Youngstown State on September 5th.   College athletes make a lot of dumb mistakes, but it doesn’t make it right what happened in the first place.  Hopefully, Tyler Boyd will be a better person for this and not put himself in a bad situation in the future.

Stanley Cup Finals Game 6

Game 6 was tough for both teams because the goaltending was stellar and the first period was scoreless.  The second period was the same thing until 2:47 left when Duncan Keith scored on a rebound to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead.   In the third period, Tampa was pressing the attack, but Corey Crawford was up to the task.   Patrick Kane scored after being step up on a great play by Brad Richards to give Chicago a 2-0 lead.  Then the Lightning pulled Ben Bishop late in the game, but to no avail as the Chicago Blackhawks won 2-0 and their 3rd Stanley Cup in 6 years.   Duncan Keith was Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the playoffs MVP with 23 points in 21 games.   There will be a lot of changes for the Blackhawks before next season due to the salary cap, but on this night Chelsea Dagger in playing in Sweet Home Chicago.

NBA Finals Game 5

Stephen Curry had an MVP performance scoring 37 points, but has a lot of help with Andre Iguodala 14 points, Draymond Green 16 points, and off the bench Leandro Barbosa had 13 points.  The Golden State Warriors shot 46% from the 3-point line and that why they defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 104 to 95 and have a 3 games to 2 lead in the series. Despite the loss, Lebron James had another incredible game with 40 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists.  He had some help with Tristan Thompson getting 19 points and 10 rebounds, and J.R. Smith had 14 points off the bench.  The Cavaliers have their backs against the wall in a must win game 6 at Quicken Loans Arena with the tip-off on Tuesday night at 9:00 P.M.

Stanley Cup Finals Game 5

The Chicago Blackhawks took control of the first period of game 5, and in collision between Victor Hedman and Ben Bishop gave Patrick Sharp an easy goal. That goal gave the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead after the first period.    In second period, the Lightning took control and Valtteri Flippula scored to tie the game at 1.  Then two minutes into the third period Antoine Vermette scored on a rebound to give the Blackhawks a 2 -1 lead.  Both teams kept pushing the play but both goalies made key saves to keep at a one goal lead for the Blackhawks.   Then Tampa pulled Bishop and tried to tied the game, but they were called for too many men on the ice with eight seconds left.  That penalty caused Tampa Bay the game and gave the Blackhawks a 2-1 lead and a 3-2 series lead.     The Blackhawks have a chance to win the Stanley Cup on Monday night for game six at the United Center with the face-off at 8:00 P.M.

NBA Finals Game 4

The Golden State Warriors shaked up their lineup by going small, and got a 103 to 82 win to tie up the series at 2 games apiece.  Stephen Curry and Andre Iguodala each had 22 points.  Draymond Green  had 17 points and Harrison Barnes 14 points.    Warriors held the Cavaliers to 14% from the 3 point line.   Lebron James had 20 points despite getting cut by a camera lens on a hard foul by Andrew Bogut.   Timofey Mozgov had a great game 28 points and 10 rebounds.  Tristan Thompson had 12 points and 13 rebounds and Matthew Dellavedova struggled with 10 points.  Now they are going back to the Oracle Arena for Game 5 Sunday night with the tip-off at 8:00 P.M.

The Star of David

Before David Blatt was the Head Coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, he was an outstanding coach in Europe winning titles in Israel, Russia, and Italy.  He led Russia to the Bronze Medal in 2012 London Olympics.   Blatt doesn’t get the credit that he deserves because he was able for getting the Cavaliers to the NBA Finals.  Some experts believe that Lebron James is the coach on the floor. The General Manager David Griffin was able to get good players in trades like Kevin Love, J.R. Smith,  Iman Shumpert, Timofey Mozgov. But it was Blatt who was able to put this team together on the court and had a tremendous regular season winning 53 games.   There was another young coach that Lebron worked with before, and he became a two-time NBA Championship winning coach.  His name is Erik Spolestra, and will Blatt join Spolestra in the NBA title club?  Well the Cavaliers are two games away from getting that done.

Stanley Cup Finals Game 4

In Game 4, Ben Bishop didn’t start so Andrei Vasilevskiy, a twenty year old rookie was in the net for The Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning out-shot the Chicago Blackhawks 9 to 2 but there was no score after the first period.  Jonathan Toews scored on a rebound 6:40 into the second period to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead.  Valtteri Fllppula sent a shot that Alex Killorn redirected it to tie the game at 1 after two periods.   Then in the third period on an individual effort Brandon Saad scored to give the Blackhawks a 2 to 1 lead.  Corey Crawford made some great saves late in the game and the Blackhawks won 2 to 1 and the series is tied at 2 games apiece. The series is heading back to Tampa’s Amalie Arena for Game 5 Saturday night with the face-off at 8:00 P.M.
