Week 3 Vs Rams

The Steelers won a tough game against the St.Louis Rams 12-6, but it was a defensive struggle.  They were able to stop the Rams running game and got to Nick Foles with 2 sacks and an interception.   The interception by Will Allen settle up a late field goal by Josh Scobee.   Le’veon Bell had a good game in his debut getting 62 yards and a touchdown.  Antonio Brown had another great game with 11 catches for 108 yards.  However, the main story was Ben Roethlisberger suffering a left knee injury and the offense went stale but give a lot of credit to the Rams defense.   It could be a short or long-term injury and Michael Vick has to be ready in a short week against the Baltimore Ravens.    The offense has to adjust to Vick and Bell has to have a big game against the Ravens defense minus Terrell Suggs.    A Steelers win could bury the Ravens season, but it will be a tough game as always this Thursday night at Heinz Field with a 8:30 P.M. kickoff.

No More Thursday Nights

The NFL had been making billions of dollars but player safety has been a big issue.   Thursday night games have been good ratings for CBS and the NFL Network.  However, the quality of the games have been less than outstanding because the teams are dealing with a short week.  They are also dealing with injuries and trying to game plan for their opponents.   Maybe by the  time of the next labor agreement the NFL will do away with Thursday night games.   I have no problem with the opening night and Thanksgiving games, but having Thursday night games during the season cheapens the product and goes against what they are trying to do with player safety.

Back to Buctober

The Pittsburgh Pirates clinched their 3rd straight playoff berth win a 13-7 victory over the Colorado Rockies.  They had a low-key celebration.   It its great to be in the playoffs again, but reminder of 21 losing years plus the frustration of the fan-base who would settle for mediocrity.    Now being in the playoffs again they have bigger goals like trying to win the National League Central Division.   With the St.Louis Cardinals leading by four games, the Pirates may have to settle for hosting the NL Wild Card game for the third straight year.    They will likely take on the Chicago Cubs and with their pitching staff it will be a tough game to win.   Even with Gerrit Cole pitching in that game, but l like the Pirates in the game and who knows maybe the World Series.

Ice Age

I had the chance to watch the Penguins pre season game versus the Carolina Hurricanes and they came out shooting.  Phil Kessel, who acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs in the off-season had two goals.  Kris Letang, who suffered a concussion and a stroke in the last two seasons had a goal and 3 assists. Ollie Maata who dealt with shoulder injury and cancer last season had a goal and assist.   Sidney Crosby, who had a great season picked up where he left off had a goal and two assists.   Sergei Gonchar, who was signed to a tryout contract had a goal and might make the team.   The Penguins had a lot of injuries last season and that derailed their playoff chances.   If this team stay healthy and Marc-Andre Fleury has another great season they could be a Stanley Cup contender.

Week 2 Vs 49ers

The Steelers defense came out to play this afternoon with 5 sacks and a turnover against the San Francisco 49ers.   Ben Roethlisberger had a great game throwing for 369 yards and 3 touchdowns.   DeAngelo Williams had another good game rushing for 77 yards and 3 touchdowns.   Antonio Brown had 9 catches for 195 yards and a touchdown.  Josh Berry had another good day punting and the coverage units didn’t give up the big return on either kickoffs or punts.   Josh Scobee missed an extra point early in the game but made the other three.    There were some bad penalties and the defense did gave some big plays.   However, the Steelers defeated the 49ers 43 to 18, and are 1 and 1 going into next Sunday’s game against the St.Louis Rams at the Edward Jones Dome with a 1:00 P.M.

Scarlet Troubles

Rutgers Football has been in the news for all the wrong reasons.   Six players kicked off the team for a home invasion in April, two former players were arrested for stealing cash and marijuana from a dorm room, and a starting wide receiver  Leonte Carroo was suspended for domestic violence for an incident outside of the football complex..   Now Head Coach Kyle Flood is suspended for 3 games and fined $50,000 for having illegal contact with a professor about changing a player’s grade.   That player was Nadir Barnwell who would be later be kicked out for being a part of the home invasion.  I would not be surprised if Flood would be fired during or after the season.   Rutgers also had to deal with firing men’s Basketball coach Mike Rice for abuse of players, but he would not be fired until the video surfaced.   Rutgers Football needs a house cleaning with the head coach to start with and try to recruit players with a lot of character as well as talent.

The Pirates are 2.5 game back of the St.Louis Cardinals going into Tuesday’s doubleheader versus the Chicago Cubs.  Pitching has been one of the catalyst for their comeback into the divisional chase.   J.A. Happ who was an afterthought after being picked up from the Seattle Mariners have been surprising to say the least.  Happ has a 5-1 record with an 1.79 ERA, and  in the bullpen Joakim Soria who acquired from the Detroit Tigers has been steady in the 7th and 8th innings, and Joe Blanton picked up from Kansas City was great in long relief.   There has been an improved bench with the acquisitions of Travis Snider, Sean Rodriguez  Michael Morse, Travis Ishikawa,  and Aramis Ramirez. plus the returns of Josh Harrison and Jody Mercer from injuries have made the infield very crowded.    Jung Ho Kang is an NL Rookie of the year candidate while Mercer and Harrison were on the disabled list, Kang is hitting .290, 16 home runs, and  58 RBIs.   Pedro Alvarez whose defense at times was embarrassing, but his offense been on the upswing hitting 23 home runs and 69 RBIs.   Can this team win the NL Central well the defense has to be better, staring pitching from Happ, A.J Burnett, Gerrit Cole, Francisco Liriano, Charlie Morton, and Jeff Locke has to get deep in the ballgame.  The bullpen has to stay strong, and Andrew McCutchen has to play at an MVP level.  If the Pirates do all that PNC Park could be in for a long Buctober.
