The Rematch

The Golden State Warriors will take on the Cleveland Cavaliers in rematch of last year’s NBA Finals.   The Warriors won in six games, but this time it will be different.   The Cavs steamrolled through Eastern Conference playoffs losing only two games.  Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love are healthy and taking the pressure off of Lebron James.    The Warriors made history won 73 regular season games, but was pushed to the limit by Oklahoma City in the Western Conference finals coming back from 3-1 series deficit.   I see this series going to seven games and King James putting on an MVP performance to give Cleveland it’s along awaited championship. Cavaliers in seven.

Stanley Cup Finals Game 1 Vs Sharks

Game one of the Stanley Cup Finals was an even game.  Early on both teams were trying to get an advantage.  From the eighth minute to the end of the first period the Penguins dominated.  Bryan Rust scored to give them a 1-0 lead and then a minute later Connor Sheary scored on a beautiful pass from Sidney Crosby to give them a 2-0 lead at the end of twenty minutes.

The Sharks took over control of the game in the second period and got some momentum.  Ian Cole was called for a hooking penalty and Tomas Hertl scored on the power play to cut the Pens lead to 2-1.  Martin Jones made some great saves and late in the period Patrick Marleau tied the game with 1:48 left in the second period.

The Penguins didn’t take advantage of two power plays and the Sharks were coming on strong early in the third period.  Matt Murray make some key saves and the Pens turned up the intensity.  Nick Bonino scored with 2:32 left in the game to give the Penguins a 3-2 lead.  They had to kill off a late penalty on Ben Lovejoy to secure the win and 1-0 series lead.  Credit Martin Jones for keeping the Sharks in the game.  The Penguins have to come out and play a 60 minutes game because the Sharks will not quit.   Game 2 is Wednesday night at the Consol Energy Center with face-off at 8:00 P.M.

Pens Vs Sharks

Now the Stanley Cup Finals are set between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the San Jose Sharks. This is how I see the series.

Goaltending:   Matt Murray is a rookie phenomena.  Martin Jones was Jonathan Quick’s backup in Los Angeles and has played outstanding.   Even

Forwards:  Penguins have 4 balanced lines,  San Jose also have 4 balanced lines, but the Penguins have Crosby and Malkin   Advantage Penguins

Defenseman:   Kris Letang is a Norris Trophy caliber defenseman, but Brent Burns has a tremendous playoff year.   Even

Special Teams:  Penguins are leading in Penalty Killing and second in Power Play.  Sharks are leading in the Power Play and third in Penalty Killing.    Advantage Penguins

The series will go seven with the Penguins winning for three reasons.

1,  Sidney Crosby will have an MVP series.

2. Matt Murray will steal at least one game.

3.vKris Letang will outplay Brent Burns

Baylor in Trouble

Baylor sports has dealt with trouble in the past with their basketball team when Patrick Dennehy was murdered by Carlton Dotson in 2003.  That murder investigation would led to rampant drug use to improper payments by the coaching staff.    Then Head Coach David Bliss told his players to lie and say that Dennehy was drug dealer.  The program was crippled by sanctions, scholarship reductions and probation until 2010.

Now it is the football team is that in trouble because the handling of sexual assault cases involving the players.  Head Coach Art Biles is fired and President Kenneth Starr has been reassigned.  There was an independent investigator via a law firm said that the University shown disregard to any woman who reported a crime of a sexual nature including rape.

What should happen to Baylor Football and how should the NCAA punish them.  They can throw the book of on the grounds of lack of institutional control, and that would mean the death penalty could be used.

Game 7 Vs Lightning

It was a pressure packed game seven with both teams pushing it to the next level.  Both goalies made good saves in the opening period as it finished scoreless.  Then in the second period, the Penguins pushed the tempo and dominated the action.  Bryan Rust scored to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead two minutes into the period.  It should have been more but Andrei Vasilevskiy made some outstanding saves.

Jonathan Drouin tied the game at one on a wrist shot on a unassisted goal.  Thirty seconds later Rust scored  again to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead.  The Penguins has some outstanding chances later on in the period, but the goal tending of Vasilevskiy kept the game at 2-1 going into the third period.

There were no goals in the third period, but it was because they play of both goalies play was amazing on both sides.  Matt Murray proved that he is no ordinary rookie but making big saves in the last few minutes.  The Penguins won 2-1 and won the series 4 games to 3.  They are the Eastern Conference Champions and will play the San Jose Sharks for the Stanley Cup with game one Monday night at the Consol Energy Center with the faceoff at 8:00 P.M.

Game 6 Vs Lightning

With their season on the line the Penguins played an amazing game winning 5 to 3 over Tampa Bay to force a game seven.  It started with Jonathan Drouin scored a goal five minutes into the game, but the Penguins challenge that it was off-sides.  The Penguins won the challenge and the goal was disallowed.  The game remained scoreless until late in the period when Phil Kessel score on a 5 on 3 power play to give the Pens a 1-0 lead going into the second period.

Kris Letang scored to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead 7:40 into the second period.  Sidney Crosby took a feed from Patric Horniqvist and scored with 26 second left in the period to give the Pens a 3-0 lead going into the third period.   The Penguins have lost only one game when leading after two periods, but it was game five in overtime against Tampa.  Matt Murray was making all of the saves he needed to get.   Brian Boyle shot deflected off of Kessel’s stick to cut the lead to 3-1.   Over seven minutes later Boyle scored again to cut the Penguins lead to 3-2.   Five minutes later Bryan Rust scored on a breakaway to give the Penguins a 4-2 lead and when Tampa pulled the goalie, Nick Bonino scored an empty net goal to make the final 5-2.

I was impressed with Murray’s performance and the Penguins character, but it will tested with game seven Thursday night at the Consol Energy Center with face-off at 8:00 P.M.

Game 5 Vs Lightning

Marc Andre Fleury started in-game 5 and Trevor Daley is out of the rest of the playoffs with a broken ankle.  The Penguins had a good first period and Brian Dumoulin scored with 00.7 left in to give them a 1-0 lead.   Ninety seconds into the second period Patric Horniqvist scored on a tip in of a Carl Hagelin shot to give the Pens a 2-0 lead.  Fleury made some big saves early in the second period when Tampa was on the power play.

Tampa killed off a penalty and Alex Killorn scored on a wrist shot to cut the Penguins lead to 2-1. A minute and ten seconds later Nikita Kucherov scored on wrist shot to tied the game at 2.  Then in the last-minute of the second period Chris Kunitz scored to give the Penguins a 3-2 lead.  Neither team has done anything on the power play.

Ollie Maata got called for a 4 minute high sticking, but it became a 4-4 when Tampa’s Tyler Johnston tripped Kris Letang. The referees allowed two blatant hooking called when Bryan Rust got hauled down, and Evgeni Malkin hooked Tyler Johnson. Both goalies made great saves and kept the third period scoreless.   After a Ryan Callahan goal was disallowed, Kucherov scored his second goal of the game to tie the game at 3 forcing an overtime period.

The overtime period didn’t last long because a Jason Garrison shot went off Tyler Johnson’s back and Tampa won the game 4 to 3 and lead the series 3 games to 2.  Fleury could not be  faulted on the overtime goal.  The Penguins have to win game six Tuesday night at the Amalie Arena with the faceoff at 8:00 P.M.

Game 4 Vs Lightning

Tampa Bay got off to a great start in Game 4 when Ryan Callahan scored 27 seconds to give them a 1-0 lead.  The Penguins were out of sync early on committing two penalties and let them dictating the tempo.  Andrej Sustr scored to make it 2-0 Tampa after the first period. Despite giving up two goals Matt Murray played well to keep the Penguins in the game.

In the second period, Tampa took advantage of Kris Letang and Matt Cullen taking penalties with Jonathan Drouin scoring on the power play to give them a 3-0 lead.  Tyler Johnson scored went the puck bounced off his body to give Tampa a 4-0 lead.  This was one of the worse period of Penguins hockey all season. Plus Trevor Daley was hurt during the period.  There was one question going into the 3rd period would Matc-Andre Fleury come in the game.

Fleury would come in the game to start the third period.  Phil Kessel scored on the blocker side to cut the Tampa lead to  4-1.  The Penguins started to play inspire hockey and got some chances on Andrei Vasilevskiy.  Evgeni Malkin scored on end to end rush to cut the Lightning lead to 4-2.  Then Tampa took a bad penalty and Chris Kunitz scored on the power play to cut it to 4-3.  The Penguins put the pressure on Vasilevskiy but could not get the tying goal.  Tampa wins 4-3 and the series is tied at 2 games apiece.  Game 5 will be Sunday night at Consol Energy Center with faceoff at 8:00 P.M .  One question will Fleury start in game 5 or they will stick with Murray.

Game 3 Vs Lightning

The Pittsburgh Penguins were able to dominate from the second period on to defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2.  Despite being scoreless in the first period Matt Murray made some great saves.   Andrei Vaslievskiy made some great saves as well and it looked like the second period would also end scoreless.  Carl Hagelin scored with 10 seconds left in the second period to give the Penguins 1-0 lead going into the third period.

Five minutes into the third period Phil Kessel increased the Penguins 2-0. and 14 seconds later Tyler Johnson scored to cut the lead to 2-1.  Then on a power play Sidney Crosby scored to increase the Penguin lead to 3-1.   Then Chris Kunitz scored unassisted to give them a 4-1 lead.  Ondrej Palat scored a late goal for the Lightning to make the final score 4-2.  The only concern is Patric Hornqvist leaving the game late with an injury.    Game 4 is Friday night at Amalie Arena with face off at 8:00 P.M.

They have been a lot of baseball movies that been successful such as Bull Durham and the Natural.    However, they have been television shows about baseball such as Bay City Blues and Ball Four that were duds in the ratings.   Fox has a new series called Pitch that will debut in 2017, and it is done with the cooperation of Major League Baseball.   It is about the first woman to play in Major League Baseball.

Kylie Bunberry stars as Ginny Baker who is a pitcher for the San Diego Padres and has to deal with all of the scrutiny that goes with playing in the big leagues.   The show maybe fictional, but there is a question that has to be asked. Can a woman play in Major League Baseball.  Well there was a woman’s professional league during World War II and that shown in the movie A League of Their Own.   There was a real women’s team called the Colorado Silver Bullets that played against men teams.  It would take an extraordinary talented woman and a team that got the guts to do it.
