Week 3 Vs Eagles

The Steelers played one of the worse games in a long time losing to the Philadelphia Eagles 34 to 3.  The offensive line had a terrible game and it showed when the Steelers had the ball There was no running game and Ben Roethlisberger was sacked 4 times.  The defense didn’t get a turnover or a sack.  Chris Boswell had a field goal blocked.  Overall, it was an awful performance on the road.    Antonio Brown had a great game with 12 catches for 140 yards.  The Steelers have to get back to the basics and with Le’veon Bell coming back against the Kansas City Chiefs that means the running game will be back to full strength.    I will be at the game against the Chiefs next Sunday night so it will be a challenge for them.

A Dutch Treat On Peachtree Street

Sunday night was a tougher test for the U.S National Women’s team taking on the Netherlands.  The crowd was shocked when the Dutch took the lead in the second minute. The U.S came on strong for the remainder of the first half.  Carli Lloyd tied the game at 1 during the 32nd minute and it stayed that way going into halftime.

Alyssa Naeher had a solid game in the nets and made some key saves in the second half.  There was an only goal that gave the U.S a 2 to 1 lead.   Allie Long scored in the 76 minute to give the U.S a 3-1 victory.  However, the defense looked shaky at times and don’t be surprised if Head Coach Jill brings in some new goaltenders, forwards, and midfielders at the next camp. They could be from the Under-17,  Under-20 teams and the NWSL when their season ends.

Megan Rapinoe took a knee during the national anthem for the second straight game.  She could be facing a suspension from U.S Soccer.  They are two friendlies against Switzerland in October and don’t be shocked if they are some changes on and off the field.

Heather’s Final Bow

Last Wednesday night in Columbus, Ohio it was the first match for the U.S National Women’s soccer team since their disappointing loss to Sweden in the Olympic quarterfinals.  Heather O’Reilly played in her 231st cap and last match for the National  team.   The match was no contest as they destroyed Thailand 9-0.   O’Reilly scored a goal and got 3 assists.  Alex Morgan had two goals, but Carli Lloyd scored a hat trick, and she was named Women of the Match.

The other part of the match before it got started is when Megan Rapinoe took a knee during the national anthem.  She came on as a substitute; during the second half.  U.S soccer made a statement about that and it took away from O’Reilly’s night.     Sunday is the next friendly match against the Netherlands at the Georgia Dome and what will happen to Rapinoe.   Will they be a punishment from U.S Soccer?   Sunday night will answer that question.

Week 2 Vs Bengals

The Pittsburgh Steelers had a tough game against the Cincinnati Bengals this afternoon.  Ben Roethlisberger had a slow start against their defense, but he made big plays throwing for 259 yards and 3 touchdowns.  DeAngelo Williams had another good game running the ball for 94 yards.   It wasn’t Antonio Brown that was catching touchdown passes, but it was Williams, Jesse James, and Xavier Grimble.

The defense stopped the Bengals running game holding them to 46 yards rushing, and forcing two fumbles.  Tyler Boyd’s late game fumble that was recovered by James Harrison and it caused some controversy.   However, Andy Dalton had a great game throwing for 366 yards and a touchdown.   The Steelers have to get some sacks and interceptions.   They will have that chance next Sunday afternoon against the Philadelphia Eagles and rookie quarterback Carson Wentz.

The Steelers won 24-16 this afternoon and now are 2-0.   However, they have to get off to quick start with the running game and protecting Ben.   Defensively they have to put the pressure on Wentz and stop the Eagles running game.

Week 1 VS Redskins

I was very impressed with the Steelers offense, and it started with offensive line protecting Ben Roethlisberger, plus opening holes for the running game.    DeAngelo Williams rushed for 143 yards scoring two touchdowns.    Ben threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns.  Antonio Brown proved to Josh Norman, and a national audience that he is one of best receivers in the NFL.   Brown had 8 catches for 128 yards for two touchdowns.

The defense put the pressure on Kirk Cousins and forced two interceptions, and stopped the Redskins running game.   However, there were no sacks and that has to improve next week against the Cincinnati Bengals.   Special Teams were good with Chris Boswell making all 5 of his extra points and a 46-yard field goal.   Jordan Berry had a good day punting the football.  The only thing that has to improve is the return game.    It  all worked in a 38 to 16 Steelers victory to start the season at 1-0.

The Cincinnati Bengals will be looking redemption from last year’s playoff loss.    The Steelers offense had to continue to make plays and run the ball well  against a stout Bengals defense.   The Steelers defense has to put the pressure on Andy Dalton and limit A.J Green’s ability to make big plays.

Cut Down Day

The Steelers have their roster down to 53 players going into next Monday night against the Washington Redskins.  I had looked it over and here is my take on it.   The secondary is going to be better with the draft picks and the trade to acquire Justin Gilbert from the Cleveland Browns.  The running game will be outstanding even with Lev’eon Bell serving a 3 game drug suspension. DeAngelo Williams can handle the chores until Bell’s return in week 4 against the Kansas City Chiefs.  The backup quarterback will be Landry Jones, and with Bruce Gradkowski on IR due to a hamstring injury.  They signed Zach Mettenberger off of waivers to be their 3rd string quarterback.  Depth at linebacker is somewhat of a concern with Bud Dupree went on IR due to a groin injury.  Leadership will not be a problem on this team because they have it.     The only thing that can derail the possibility of seventh Super Bowl title if Ben Roethlisberger being hurt for an extended period of time.
