Before the Floyd Mayweather vs Connor McGregor fight fused boxing and MMA together in a super fight. There was an event that fused boxing and pro wrestling and it occurred on June 26, 1976 in Tokyo, Japan at the Budokan Hall. Muhammad Ali was the heavyweight champion of the world and ruled boxing. There were few contenders on the horizon because Joe Frazier and George Foreman were retired. So Ali decided to get into a new ring one that would involve his showmanship pro wrestling. Ali got his inspiration from a wrestling legend from 1950’s, Gorgeous George. Ali was signed to fight Antonio Inoki, who is one of Japan’s most legendary wrestlers. Inoki had martial arts experience besides being a proponent of strong style wrestling. Ali took on Buddy Wolfe, a few weeks before the Inoki match and to see most popular athlete in the world take on a pro wrestler was a money grab. The event was typical Ali hype fest and it was a 15 round contest. Inoki was on the ground kicking Ali’s legs, and those kicks got Ali hospitalized after the contest with blood clots. Ali threw few punches and the contest was declared a draw. Mayweather vs McGregor will be a hypefest and a money grab and that is pure and simple.
As soon as the Golden State Warriors won the 2017 NBA Finals there has been a lot of speculation about Lebron’s James future. He still has one year on his deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He is a free agent in 2018 and there have been reports he could play for the San Antonio Spurs or one of the teams in Los Angeles. Los Angeles makes the most sense because his media company and has a home is there. San Antonio would be tough because they have a great team with Kawhi Leonard. Why would Lebron go to the western conference and not get to the NBA Finals? The Warriors are the odds on favor to win the 2018 NBA Title. If the Cavaliers can improve the team they can win the title. Don’t be surprised if there is a trade involving Kevin Love and bring in another superstar.
What would happen if a boxer takes on a MMA fighter? Floyd Mayweather will take on Connor McGregor on August 26th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mayweather, who one of greatest boxer of all time and will take on McGregor, who one of greatest UFC fighter of all time. McGregor would put on boxing gloves and come in at 154 pounds in around fight for the first time. I don’t see this fight as a competitive one but more as a spectacle. Because if Mayweather lose it would hurt his legacy as an all-time great boxer. Give credit to UFC founder and President Dana White and Mayweather making this fight possible. However. I don’t see this fight going long and Mayweather winning this fight easy.
Unlike last year I was at the Penguins Stanley Cup Parade. Reports were there was 650,000 people along the parade route, but it is a little exaggerated. I was at the end of the parade at Point State Park and it looked like 500,000 to me. Whatever the number was it was bigger than the Stanley Cup Parade of 2009 that I attended. There were some speakers after the team arrived at Point State Park, and it lasted 15 minutes. Nevertheless, it was a great parade and there is already talk of a 3-peat, but let us enjoy the celebration first.
I have the chance to go to the Stanley Cup Parade tomorrow and it will be a great day. Watching the Penguins the last two seasons have been great due to the team being able to make history. They were the first team to win back to back Stanley Cup since the 1998 Detroit Red Wings. Sidney Crosby is an all time great and winning the Conn Smythe as playoff MVP, two years on a row has put him on the same level as Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky. Matt Murray shutouts of the Nashville Predators in game five and six has established him the goalie of the future. Mike Sullivan made all of the right move behind the bench during the real season and playoffs. He is now one of the outstanding coaches in the NHL. As far as next season their will be some changes with retirements, expansion, and free agency. The Penguins are already odds on favorites to win the Stanley Cup in 2018, but can we enjoy the parade first.
The Golden State Warriors got redemption for blowing a 3 to 1 lead in the 2016 NBA Finals. They defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 129 to 120 to win the NBA title in five games. Kevin Durant scored 39 points in-game five to win the NBA Finals MVP. Stephen Curry had 34 points and Andre Iguodala got 20 points. Lebron James average a triple double during the NBA Finals. James got 41 points and had some help with Kyrie Irving getting 26 points. J.R Smith had his best game of the series 25 points and Tristan Thompson had a great game with 15 points and 8 rebounds. The Cavaliers didn’t have much help from the bench during the series. How will the Warriors be remembered going 15 and 1 during the playoffs? They signed Durant after losing the title last season and got redemption from losing the title after a 73-9 regular season. The Cavaliers might make some moves and trying keeping GM David Griffin is one of them. Could they make a big trade for the likes of Paul George. Could James go to the LA Lakers in 2018 or stay in Cleveland. The NBA off-season will be one to watch and don’t be shocked if the Cavaliers take on the Warriors in the NBA Finals next season.
The Pittsburgh Penguins showed the hockey world why they are back to back Stanley Cup Champions. After two scoreless periods, they were able to defeated the Nashville Predators 2-0 in game six. Patric Hornqvist scored with 1:35 left in the third period and Carl Hagelin added an empty net goal with 13 seconds remaining. This team survived injuries to Kris Letang and Nick Bonino, plus going seven games with Washington and Ottawa just to get to the Stanley Cup Final. Marc-Andre Fleury started the playoffs but Matt Murray finished up with two shutouts in game five and six. They will be changes with the expansion draft and free agency coming up. Could Matt Cullen retire and will Fleury get traded, but they are enjoying being the first team since 1997-98 Detroit Red Wings to repeat as the Stanley Cup Champions.
The Cleveland Cavaliers down 3 games to none played an incredible first half scoring 86 points. Lebron James got another triple double with 31 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists. Kylie Irving got 40 points and Kevin Love had 23 points plus made 6 out of 8 from the third point line. Tristan Thompson had his best game of the series with 5 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. The bench made some contributions with J.R Smith getting 12 points and Richard Jefferson 8 points. Kevin Durant had 35 points and was the only Warrior to have a good game. Golden State shot only 28% from the three-point line. Cleveland played outstanding defense and won game 4 137-116 forcing game five Monday night at Oracle Arena with the tip-off at 9:00 P.M.
The Penguins had an amazing start in-game 5 when a penalty was called on Nashville’s Ryan Ellis. Justin Schultz scored on the power play 91 seconds into the game to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead. Over 5 minutes later Bryan Rust scored to increase the lead to 2-0. Then with 11 seconds left in the first period Evgeni Malkin scored to give the Pens a 3-0 lead after the first period. in the second period, Nashville made a change in-goal with Juuse Sarios replacing Pekka Rinne. Connor Sheary scored a 1:19 into the second period to increase the Penguins lead to 4-0. Phil Kessel scored on a wrist shot to increase the lead to 5-0. Ron Hainsey scored to give the Pens a 6-0 lead after the second period. Then was no scoring in the third period but Nashville was very frustrated. Matt Murray bounced back from two bad performances to get a shutout with 24 saves. Sidney Crosby was outstanding getting 3 assists and earning first star honors. The Penguins won 6-0 and take a 3 games to 2 series lead back to Nashville. They can win their 5th Stanley Cup in franchise history Sunday night at the Bridgestone Arena with face off time of 8:00 P.M.
The Cavaliers played the best game of the series and for 3 quarters they had the Golden State Warriors on the ropes. Lebron James had an amazing game with 37 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists. Kylie Irving had 38 points and J.R Smith came off the bench with 16 points. There was little help from the rest of the bench and Tristan Thompson. Then late in the 4th quarter, the Warriors showed why they will be NBA champions again. Kevin Durant had 31 points, and Klay Thompson had 30 points and made 6 out of 11 from the 3 point line. Stephen Curry scored 26 points and made 5 out of 9 from the 3 point line. The Warriors had an 11-0 run in the last 3:19 of the game and won 118 to 113. They have a 3 games to 0 series lead and can win the NBA title Friday night. Game 4 will be at the Ouicken Loan Arena on Friday night with tip-off at 9:00 P.M.
