Remember Tokyo 1976

Before the Floyd Mayweather vs Connor McGregor fight fused boxing and MMA together in a super fight. There was an event that fused boxing and pro wrestling and it occurred on June 26, 1976 in Tokyo, Japan at the Budokan Hall.  Muhammad Ali was the heavyweight champion of the world and ruled boxing.   There were few contenders on the horizon because Joe Frazier and George Foreman were retired.  So Ali decided to get into a new ring one that would involve his showmanship pro wrestling.    Ali got his inspiration from a wrestling legend from 1950’s, Gorgeous George.    Ali was signed to fight Antonio Inoki, who is one of Japan’s most legendary wrestlers.  Inoki had martial arts experience besides being a proponent of strong style wrestling.  Ali took on Buddy Wolfe, a few weeks before the Inoki match and to see most popular athlete in the world take on a pro wrestler was a money grab.   The event was typical Ali hype fest and it was a 15 round contest.   Inoki was on the ground kicking Ali’s legs, and those kicks got Ali hospitalized after the contest with blood clots.   Ali threw few punches and the contest was declared a draw.    Mayweather vs McGregor will be a hypefest and a money grab and that is pure and simple.
